Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of child rights and be able to apply those rights in practice when working with younger children.

 

Course Content:

  • The relationship between needs and rights – Understanding the core assumptions.

  • Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) – Rights included, status & implications

  • Child rights implications for professionals working with young children – Listening to the child and respecting their rights in practice

  • Child rights implications for the system in which the professional is working - Does the environment promote the best interests of all children?

  • Responsibility of the professional – Advocacy, child rights and child protection

  • Measuring progress in respecting children’s rights – Indicators and M&E tools


Target Group:

The course is relevant for all professionals working with young children, for example, school committees, pre-primary teachers, religious leaders, social workers, prison staff nurses, doctors, community health, education and/or development officers, and INGO/NGO program staff.
