Electoral Democracy Seminar at MS TCDC
MS TCDC holds a three days seminar which engaged a dialogue with public servants, NGO activists, politicians, religious leaders, civil society leaders, media personalities, human rights and gender activists, academics and citizens drawn from Egypt, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan, Lesotho and other countries on 3 fundamental questions:
- How electoral democracy can lead to the attainment of democratic governance?
- What concrete options exist to make elections deliver freedom and just and democratic governance?
- What is the citizen role in making democracy effective?
The Electoral Democracy Seminar just ended where neo-liberal democracy and elections by extension were challenged as an imposition of the West on the rest. However, it was agreed that we cannot turn to Athenian democracy but we should instead find an alternative that speaks to the African context and its attributes of the economy of affection, solidarity and sense of humanism.
